    1. Why should I choose the SCODE’s Cookstoves? Advantages of buying a SCODE Improved Cook Stove.

    1. What types of fuel can the stove use?

    We offer several models of stoves that can use a variety of biomass fuels. The most outstanding is Kuni Mbiliwhich burns wood and other dried biomass (e.g., corncobs, cow dung, etc.). The KuniMbili can burn wood, other dried biomass, or charcoal. The Jiko Star is one of the charcoal cookstove.

    1. How much fuel does the stove need to cook effectively?

     

    The great thing about our stove design is that not a lot of fuel is needed. Once a fire is started in the combustion chamber of the stove, all you need are three, one foot long sticks less than an inch in diameter to boil 5 liters of water and another stick to simmer it for 45 minutes. On the Jiko Star you can cook a whole chicken with 10 charcoal briquettes .The amount of fuel really depends on the cooking task.

    a)     Jiko Star

    KCJ Stoves are charcoal-burning stoves specially designed to reduce charcoal consumption, carbon monoxide emission and last longer. They are made by trained artisans from high quality materials which enhance their efficiency and durability. So, if you’re in a city, don’t have access to wood, like the taste of food cooked with charcoal or think charcoal is easier to store for emergency preparation, then this is the stove for you.

    b)    Multi-Purpose  Stove (Kuni Mbili)

    This is a highly efficient fire-wood burning stove which is adaptable to using charcoal. It combines the characteristics of a charcoal burning stove (KCJ) and a firewood burning stove (maendeleo).

    c)     Gassifier Stove

    This is a highly efficient cooking stove that uses firewood and has a fan that is powered by solar power, battery or electricity.  The fan creates a forced draft causing the stove to light like a gas burner with a blue-yellow flame. It is available in two sizes, Institutional and household.

    d)    Jiko Kisasa Stove

    This is a portable pottery cylinder (ceramic liner) that is installed by building a mud or concrete surrounding in the kitchen. It is suitable for use in households and institutions with a permanent fireplace.

    e)    Institutional Stoves

    These are highly efficient, large heavy duty cooking stoves that use firewood. They save on fuel costs, time and energy. The stoves come in varying sizes complete with heavy duty stainless steel pot and chimney.

    f)      Rocket Stoves

    1. I live outside Nakuru and want to buy a stove for cooking, what do I do?

    The Clean Cookstove Association of Kenya and Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a great place to start. They are a private-public partnership set up with the express purpose of educating people about what improved cookstoves can do and getting more out there.
